Abstract | Solar Probe Plus (SPP) will be the first mission to fly into the Sun s lower corona as close as 9.5 solar radii from the center of the sun. Launching no later than 2018, the mission will reveal how the corona is heated and how the solar wind is accelerated, solving two fundamental mysteries that have been top-priority science goals for many decades. The SPP Reference Vehicle spacecraft, described in this paper, accommodates the Science and Technology Definition Team reference payload, and demonstrates feasibility and technology readiness. The Reference Vehicle was presented at the SPP MCR, successfully completed October 1, 2009. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. |
