Observing the corona and inner heliosphere with Parker Solar Probe The recently launched Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission is expected to provide unprecedented views of the solar corona and inner heliosphere. In addition to instruments devoted to taking measurements of the local solar wind, the spacecraft carries a visible imager: the Wide-field Imager for Solar PRobe (WISPR). WISPR will take advantage of the proximity of the spacecraft to the Sun to perform local imaging of the near-Sun environment. WISPR will observe coronal structures at high spatial and time resolutions, although the obs ... So you Passed an Earned Value Management Government Validation - Now What? In December 2016, The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) received formal acceptance from NASA that its Earned Value Management System (EVMS) complied with the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) Standard 748 EVMS guidelines and thus had a government validated system. JHU/APL had successfully used its EVMS for single, large missions (Van Allen Probe from January 2009 to July 2012 and Parker Solar Probe from April 2014 to August 2018), but now with an increased workload JHU/APL was faced with the ne ... Solar Radiation Disturbance Torque Reduction for the Parker Solar Probe Observatory This paper examines the methodology used for reducing solar pressure disturbance torques for the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Observatory by minimizing the offset between spacecraft s Center of Gravity (CG) and Center of Pressure (CP). The force due to solar radiation pressures encountered by the PSP spacecraft, particularly at the 9.86 solar-radii (Rs) closest approach point in the orbit, are of a sufficient magnitude to produce significant disturbance torques. Inside of 0.25 AU, the Observatory is required to keep its Thermal ... Parametric Decay and the Origin of the Low-frequency Alfv\ enic Spectrum of the Solar Wind The fast solar wind shows a wide spectrum of transverse magnetic and velocity field perturbations. These perturbations are strongly correlated in the sense of Alfv\ en waves propagating mostly outward, from the Sun to the interplanetary medium. They are likely to be fundamental to the acceleration and the heating of the solar wind. However, the precise origin of the broadband spectrum is unknown to date. Typical periods of chromospheric Alfv\ en waves are limited to a few minutes, and any longer period perturbations shoul ... Modeling a Single SEP Event from Multiple Vantage Points Using the iPATH Model Using the recently extended 2D improved Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere (iPATH) model, we model an example gradual solar energetic particle event as observed at multiple locations. On the Performance of Multi-Instrument Solar Flare Observations During Solar Cycle 24 The current fleet of space-based solar observatories offers us a wealth of opportunities to study solar flares over a range of wavelengths. Significant advances in our understanding of flare physics often come from coordinated observations between multiple instruments. Optimal design of thermal protection considering the carbon foam morphology High-porous open cell foams can be used as efficient thermal insulation in many high-temperature applications including hypersonic vehicles, re-entry spacecrafts, solar and planetary probes, whose structures and systems are exposed to extreme heat loads. The benefits of such materials include extremely low density, high temperature capability, sufficient strength at the operating temperatures and low thermal conductivity. Turbulence plays a key role in the conversion of the energy of large-scale fields and flows to plasma heat, impacting the macroscopic evolution of the heliosphere and other astrophysical plasma systems. The Solar Probe Plus Mission: Humanity\textquoterights First Visit to Our Star Solar Probe Plus (SPP) will be the first spacecraft to fly into the low solar corona. SPP\textquoterights main science goal is to determine the structure and dynamics of the Sun\textquoterights coronal magnetic field, understand how the solar corona and wind are heated and accelerated, and determine what processes accelerate energetic particles. Understanding these fundamental phenomena has been a top-priority science goal for over five decades, dating back to the 1958 Simpson Committee Report. The scale and concept of su ... Emissivity of Boron Nitride and Metals for the Solar Probe Plus Mission For application to the Solar Probe Plus mission (NASA), the behavior and the thermo-optical performance at very high temperatures (range 1100\textendash2200\ K) of candidate passive thermal control materials was assessed. On one hand, a pyrolytic boron nitride coating (130 μm\ 130 μm thick) was proved to be stable at high temperatures up to 2200\ K in vacuum, as well as proved, via total and spectral emissivity measurements at high temperatures, to be able to effectively turn an initially ...

Slow Solar Wind: Observations and Modeling While it is certain that the fast solar wind originates from coronal holes, where and how the slow solar wind (SSW) is formed remains an outstanding question in solar physics even in the post-SOHO era. The quest for the SSW origin forms a major objective for the planned future missions such as the Solar Orbiter and Solar Probe Plus. Nonetheless, results from spacecraft data, combined with theoretical modeling, have helped to investigate many aspects of the SSW. Fundamental physical properties of the coronal plasma have be ...
