The effect of variations in the magnetic field direction from turbulence on kinetic-scale instabilities
At kinetic scales in the solar wind, instabilities transfer energy from particles to fluctuations in the electromagnetic fields while restoring plasma conditions towards thermodynamic equilibrium. We investigate the interplay between background turbulent fluctuations at the small-scale end of the inertial range and kinetic instabilities acting to reduce proton temperature anisotropy. We analyse in situ solar wind observations from the Solar Orbiter mission to develop a measure for variability in the magnetic field direction. ...

NIRwave: A wave-turbulence-driven solar wind model constrained by PSP observations
\ Aims: We generate a model description of the solar wind based on an explicit wave-turbulence-driven heating mechanism, and constrain our model with observational data. \ Methods: We included an explicit coronal heating source term in the general 3D magnetohydrodynamic code NIRVANA to simulate the properties of the solar wind. The adapted heating mechanism is based on the interaction and subsequent dissipation of counter- propagating Alfv\ en waves in the solar corona, accounting for a turbulent heating rate Q$_p$. The sola ...

Solar Electron Beam Velocities That Grow Langmuir Waves in the Inner Heliosphere
Solar accelerated electron beams, a component of space weather, are emitted by eruptive events at the Sun. They interact with the ambient plasma to grow Langmuir waves, which subsequently produce radio emission, changing the electrons motion through space. Solar electron beam-plasma interactions are simulated using a quasilinear approach to kinetic theory to probe the variations in the maximum electron velocity [\ensuremath\Xi ] responsible for Langmuir wave growth between the Sun s surface and 50 R$_\ensuremath\odot$ above ...

E-Sail Option for Plunging a Spacecraft into the Sun s Atmosphere
A close observation of the near-Sun region, with in situ measurements, requires that a scientific probe be placed in a heliocentric orbit with a perihelion distance on the order of a few solar radii only. This is the solution adopted by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP), whose mission design uses a very complex transfer trajectory with seven Venus gravity assists to reach a perihelion radius of roughly 9.9 solar radii in about seven years. This paper aims to discuss the capability of an Electric Solar-Wind Sail (E-sail), i.e., a ...

Whistler waves generated inside magnetic dips in the young solar wind: Observations of the search-coil magnetometer on board Parker Solar Probe
Context. Whistler waves are electromagnetic waves produced by electron- driven instabilities, which in turn can reshape the electron distributions via wave-particle interactions. In the solar wind they are one of the main candidates for explaining the scattering of the strahl electron population into the halo at increasing radial distances from the Sun and for subsequently regulating the solar wind heat flux. However, it is unclear what type of instability dominates to drive whistler waves in the solar wind. \ Aims: Our goal ...

Prediction and Verification of Parker Solar Probe Solar Wind Sources at 13.3 R$_\ensuremath\odot$
Drawing connections between heliospheric spacecraft and solar wind sources is a vital step in understanding the evolution of the solar corona into the solar wind and contextualizing in situ timeseries. Furthermore, making advanced predictions of this linkage for ongoing heliospheric missions, such as Parker Solar Probe (Parker), is necessary for achieving useful coordinated remote observations and maximizing scientific return. Whistler Wave Observations by Parker Solar Probe During Encounter 1: Counter-propagating Whistlers Collocated with Magnetic Field Inhomogeneities and their Application to Electric Field Measurement Calibration
Observations of the young solar wind by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission reveal the existence of intense plasma wave bursts with frequencies between 0.05 and 0.20f $_ce$ (tens of hertz up to \raisebox-0.5ex\textasciitilde300 Hz) in the spacecraft frame. The wave bursts are often collocated with inhomogeneities in the solar wind magnetic field, such as local dips in magnitude or sudden directional changes. The observed waves are identified as electromagnetic whistler waves that propagate either sunward, anti-sunward, or i ...

On the utility of flux rope models for CME magnetic structure below 30 R$_\ensuremath\odot$
We present a comprehensive analysis of the three-dimensional magnetic flux rope structure generated during the Lynch et al. (2019, ApJ 880:97) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of a global-scale, 360 \textdegree -wide streamer blowout coronal mass ejection (CME) eruption. We create both fixed and moving synthetic spacecraft to generate time series of the MHD variables through different regions of the flux rope CME. Our moving spacecraft trajectories are derived from the spatial coordinates of Parker Solar Probe s past enc ...

Observation of a Magnetic Switchback in the Solar Corona
Switchbacks are sudden, large radial deflections of the solar wind magnetic field, widely revealed in interplanetary space by the Parker Solar Probe. Observation of a Magnetic Switchback in the Solar Corona
Switchbacks are sudden, large radial deflections of the solar wind magnetic field, widely revealed in interplanetary space by the Parker Solar Probe.
