On the role of interplanetary shocks in accelerating MeV electrons Context. One of the sources of solar energetic particle (SEP) events is shocks that are driven by fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs). They can accelerate SEPs up to relativistic energies and are attributed to the largest SEP events. New studies suggest that CME-driven shocks can potentially accelerate electrons to MeV energies in the vicinity of the Sun. \ Aims: We focus on relativistic electrons associated with strong interplanetary shocks between 2007 and 2019 to determine whether the shocks can keep accelerating such elec ... Parker Solar Probe Encounters the Leg of a Coronal Mass Ejection at 14 Solar Radii We use Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations to report the first direct measurements of the particle and field environments while crossing the leg of a coronal mass ejection (CME) very close to the Sun (\raisebox-0.5ex\textasciitilde14 Rs). An analysis that combines imaging from 1 au and PSP with a CME model, predicts an encounter time and duration that correspond to an unusual, complete dropout in low-energy solar energetic ions from H-Fe, observed by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS\ensuremath\odotIS). An analytical model for dust impact voltage signals and its application to STEREO/WAVES data Context. Dust impacts have been observed using radio and wave instruments onboard spacecraft since the 1980s. Voltage waveforms show typical impulsive signals generated by dust grains. \ Aims: We aim at developing models of how signals are generated to be able to link observed electric signals to the physical properties of the impacting dust. To validate the model, we use the Time Domain Sampler (TDS) subsystem of the STEREO/WAVES instrument which generates high- cadence time series of voltage pulses for each monopole. \ Met ... Magnetic Switchback Occurrence Rates in the Inner Heliosphere: Parker Solar Probe and 1 au The subject of switchbacks, defined either as large angular deflections or polarity reversals of the magnetic field, has generated substantial interest in the space physics community since the launch of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) in 2018. Previous studies have characterized switchbacks in several different ways and have been restricted to data available from the first few orbits. Here, we analyze the frequency of occurrence of switchbacks per unit distance for the first full eight orbits of PSP. In this work, events that r ... Context. Alfv\ enic fluctuations are ubiquitous features observed in solar wind, especially in the inner heliosphere. However, strong Alfv\ enic fluctuations are recovered in the near-Earth solar wind too, mainly in fast streams, but also in some cases in slow wind intervals, as highlighted in recent studies. \ Aims: The present study focuses on a statistical comparison between different phases of solar cycles 23 and 24 with regard to the Alfv\ enic content of solar wind fluctuations. Particular attention is devoted to the A ... First Solar Orbiter observation of the Alfv\ enic slow wind and identification of its solar source Context. Turbulence dominated by large-amplitude, nonlinear Alfv\ en-like fluctuations mainly propagating away from the Sun is ubiquitous in high-speed solar wind streams. Recent studies have demontrated that slow wind streams may also show strong Alfv\ enic signatures, especially in the inner heliosphere. \ Aims: The present study focuses on the characterisation of an Alfv\ enic slow solar wind interval observed by Solar Orbiter between 14 and 18 July 2020 at a heliocentric distance of 0.64 AU. \ Methods: Our analysis is ba ... The first widespread solar energetic particle event observed by Solar Orbiter on 2020 November 29 Context. On 2020 November 29, the first widespread solar energetic particle (SEP) event of solar cycle 25 was observed at four widely separated locations in the inner (\ensuremath\lesssim1 AU) heliosphere. Relativistic electrons as well as protons with energies > 50 MeV were observed by Solar Orbiter (SolO), Parker Solar Probe, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A and multiple near- Earth spacecraft. The SEP event was associated with an M4.4 class X-ray flare and accompanied by a coronal mass ejection and a ... Dynamics of nanodust in the vicinity of a stellar corona: Effect of plasma corotation Context. In the vicinity of the Sun or other stars, the motion of the coronal and stellar wind plasma must include some amount of corotation, which could affect the dynamics of charged dust particles. In the case of the Sun, this region is now investigated in situ by the Parker Solar Probe. Charged dust particles coming from the vicinity of the Sun can also reach, and possibly be detected by, the Solar Orbiter. \ Aims: We use numerical simulations and theoretical models to study the effect of plasma corotation on the motion ... Context. Parker Solar Probe (PSP) is providing an unprecedented view of the Sun s corona as it progressively dips closer into the solar atmosphere with each solar encounter. Each set of observations provides a unique opportunity to test and constrain global models of the solar corona and inner heliosphere and, in turn, use the model results to provide a global context for interpreting such observations. Full inversion of solar relativistic electron events measured by the Helios spacecraft Context. The Parker Solar Probe and the incoming Solar Orbiter mission will provide measurements of solar energetic particle (SEP) events at close heliocentric distances from the Sun. Up to present, the largest data set of SEP events in the inner heliosphere are the observations by the two Helios spacecraft. Aims. We re-visit a sample of 15 solar relativistic electron events measured by the Helios mission with the goal of better characterising the injection histories of solar energetic particles a ... A semi-analytical foreshock model for energetic storm particle events inside 1 AU We have constructed a semi-analytical model of the energetic-ion foreshock of a CME-driven coronal/interplanetary shock wave responsible for the acceleration of large solar energetic particle (SEP) events. The model is based on the analytical model of diffusive shock acceleration of Bell (1978), appended with a temporal dependence of the cut-off momentum of the energetic particles accelerated at the shock, derived from the theory. Parameters of the model are re-calibrated using a fully time-dependent self-consistent simul ...
