Continued PSP/WISPR Observations of a Phaethon-related Dust Trail
We present an update to the first white-light detections of a dust trail observed closely following the orbit of asteroid (3200) Phaethon, as seen by the Wide-field Imager for the Parker Solar Probe instrument on the NASA Parker Solar Probe mission. Here, we provide a summary and analysis of observations of the dust trail over nine separate mission encounters between 2018 October and 2021 August that saw the spacecraft approach to within 0.0277 au of the orbit of Phaethon. We find the photometric and estimated dust mass prop ...

The Encounter of the Parker Solar Probe and a Comet-like Object Near the Sun: Model Predictions and Measurements
The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) aims to explore the nascent solar wind close to the Sun. Meanwhile, PSP is also expected to encounter small objects like comets and asteroids. In this work, we survey the ephemerides to find the chance of a recent encounter and then model the interaction between released dusty plasmas and solar wind plasmas. On 2019 September 2, a comet-like object, the 322P/Solar and Heliosphere Observatory, just passed its perihelion flying to a heliocentric distance of 0.12 au and swept by PSP at a relative di ...

Predictions for Dusty Mass Loss from Asteroids During Close Encounters with Solar Probe Plus
The Solar Probe Plus ( SPP) mission will explore the Sun\textquoterights corona and innermost solar wind starting in 2018. The spacecraft will also come close to a number of Mercury-crossing asteroids with perihelia less than 0.3 AU. At small heliocentric distances, these objects may begin to lose mass, thus becoming "active asteroids" with comet-like comae or tails. This paper assembles a database of 97 known Mercury-crossing asteroids that may be encountered by SPP, and it presents estimates of their time-dependent visi ...
