New Observations of Solar Wind 1/f Turbulence Spectrum from Parker Solar Probe The trace magnetic power spectrum in the solar wind is known to be characterized by a double power law at scales much larger than the proton gyro-radius, with flatter spectral exponents close to -1 found at the lower frequencies below an inertial range with indices closer to [-1.5, -1.67]. The origin of the 1/f range is still under debate. In this study, we selected 109 magnetically incompressible solar wind intervals (\ensuremath\delta\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid/\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid \ensuremath\ll 1) from ... Does Turbulence along the Coronal Current Sheet Drive Ion Cyclotron Waves? Evidence for the presence of ion cyclotron waves (ICWs), driven by turbulence, at the boundaries of the current sheet is reported in this paper. By exploiting the full potential of the joint observations performed by Parker Solar Probe and the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, local measurements of the solar wind can be linked with the large-scale structures of the solar corona. The results suggest that the dynamics of the current sheet layers generates turbulence, which in turn creates a sufficiently strong temperat ... Proton and Electron Temperatures in the Solar Wind and Their Correlations with the Solar Wind Speed The heating and acceleration of the solar wind remains one of the unsolved fundamental problems in heliophysics. It is usually observed that the proton temperature T $_ i $ is highly correlated with the solar wind speed V $_SW$, while the electron temperature T $_ e $ shows anticorrelation or no clear correlation with the solar wind speed. Here, we inspect both Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and WIND data, and compare the observations with simulation results. PSP observations below 30 solar radii clearly show a positive correlatio ... Inhomogeneous Kinetic Alfv\ en Waves in the Near-Sun Solar Wind Intervals of intense electromagnetic, broadband plasma waves are reported in the near-Sun solar wind. These waves are identified as kinetic Alfv\ en waves (KAWs), based on comparison between data and theory for their observed electric- to magnetic-field ratio, and magnetic compressibility, as a function of frequency. In contrast to KAW observations at 1 au, KAWs in the near-Sun solar wind are found to be spatially inhomogeneous, preferentially occurring where the ambient magnetic field experiences strong deviations from the ... Strong Perpendicular Velocity-space Diffusion in Proton Beams Observed by Parker Solar Probe The SWEAP instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) has detected numerous proton beams associated with coherent, circularly polarized, ion-scale waves observed by PSP s FIELDS instrument suite. Measurements during PSP Encounters 4-8 revealed pronounced complex shapes in the proton velocity distribution functions (VDFs), in which the tip of the beam undergoes strong perpendicular diffusion, resulting in VDF level contours that resemble a hammerhead. We refer to these proton beams, with their attendant hammerhead fe ... In the lower solar coronal regions where the magnetic field is dominant, the Alfv\ en speed is much higher than the wind speed. In contrast, the near-Earth solar wind is strongly super- Alfv\ enic, i.e., the wind speed greatly exceeds the Alfv\ en speed. The transition between these regimes is classically described as the Alfv\ en point but may in fact occur in a distributed Alfv\ en critical region. NASA s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission has entered this region, as it follows a series of orbits that gradually approach ... The solar wind measured in situ by Parker Solar Probe in the very inner heliosphere is studied in combination with the remote-sensing observation of the coronal source region provided by the METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The coronal outflows observed near the ecliptic by Metis on 2021 January 17 at 16:30 UT, between 3.5 and 6.3 R $_\ensuremath\odot$ above the eastern solar limb, can be associated with the streams sampled by PSP at 0.11 and 0.26 au from the Sun, in two time intervals almost 5 days apart. Motivated by recent Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations of switchbacks (abrupt, large-amplitude reversals in the radial magnetic field, which exhibit Alfv\ enic correlations), we examine the dynamics of large-amplitude Alfv\ en waves in the expanding solar wind. We develop an analytic model that makes several predictions: switchbacks should preferentially occur in regions where the solar wind plasma has undergone a greater expansion, the switchback fraction at radii comparable to PSP should be an increasing function of ... Evolution of Switchbacks in the Inner Heliosphere We analyze magnetic field data from the first six encounters of Parker Solar Probe, three Helios fast streams and two Ulysses south polar passes covering heliocentric distances 0.1 \ensuremath\lesssim R \ensuremath\lesssim 3 au. We use this data set to statistically determine the evolution of switchbacks of different periods and amplitudes with distance from the Sun. Solar Origin of Compressive Alfv\ enic Spikes/Kinks as Observed by Parker Solar Probe The solar wind is found by the Parker Solar Probe to be abundant with Alfv\ enic velocity spikes and magnetic field kinks. Temperature enhancement is another remarkable feature associated with the Alfv\ enic spikes. How the prototype of these coincident phenomena is generated intermittently in the source region is an important and wide-ranging subject. Here we propose a new model introducing guide-field discontinuity into the interchange magnetic reconnection between open funnels and closed loops with different magnetic heli ... Anisotropy of Solar Wind Turbulence in the Inner Heliosphere at Kinetic Scales: PSP Observations The anisotropy of solar wind turbulence is a critical issue in understanding the physics of energy transfer between scales and energy conversion between fields and particles in the heliosphere. Using the measurement of Parker Solar Probe (PSP), we present an observation of the anisotropy at kinetic scales in the slow, Alfv\ enic, solar wind in the inner heliosphere. The magnetic compressibility behaves as expected for kinetic Alfv\ enic turbulence below the ion scale. A steepened transition range is found between the inertia ... Turbulent Generation of Magnetic Switchbacks in the Alfv\ enic Solar Wind One of the most important early results from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) is the ubiquitous presence of magnetic switchbacks, whose origin is under debate. Using a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation of the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics from the corona to 40 solar radii, we investigate whether magnetic switchbacks emerge from granulation-driven Alfv\ en waves and turbulence in the solar wind. The simulated solar wind is an Alfv\ enic slow-solar- wind stream with a radial profile consistent with var ... MHD and Ion Kinetic Waves in Field-aligned Flows Observed by Parker Solar Probe Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed predominately Alfv\ enic fluctuations in the solar wind near the Sun where the magnetic field tends to be radially aligned. In this paper, two magnetic- field-aligned solar wind flow intervals during PSP s first two orbits are analyzed. Observations of these intervals indicate strong signatures of parallel/antiparallel-propagating waves. We utilize multiple analysis techniques to extract the properties of the observed waves in both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic scales. At the MHD sca ... The magnetic switchbacks observed recently by the Parker Solar Probe have raised the question about their nature and origin. One of the competing theories of their origin is the interchange reconnection in the solar corona. In this scenario, switchbacks are generated at the reconnection site between open and closed magnetic fields, and are either advected by an upflow or propagate as waves into the solar wind. In this paper we test the wave hypothesis, numerically modeling the propagation of a switchback, modeled as an embed ... The first radial alignment between Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter spacecraft is used to investigate the evolution of solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere.
