Modeling of Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations We present the first theoretical modeling of joint Parker Solar Probe (PSP)-Metis/Solar Orbiter (SolO) quadrature observations. The combined observations describe the evolution of a slow solar wind plasma parcel from the extended solar corona (3.5-6.3 R $_\ensuremath\odot$) to the very inner heliosphere (23.2 R $_\ensuremath\odot$). The Metis/SolO instrument remotely measures the solar wind speed finding a range from 96 to 201 km s$^-1$, and PSP measures the solar wind plasma in situ, observing a radial speed of 219.34 km s$ ... The Solar Probe ANalyzer-Ions on the Parker Solar Probe The Solar Probe ANalyzer for Ions (SPAN-I) onboard NASA s Parker Solar Probe spacecraft is an electrostatic analyzer with time-of- flight capabilities that measures the ion composition and three- dimensional distribution function of the thermal corona and solar-wind plasma. SPAN-I measures the energy per charge of ions in the solar wind from 2 eV to 30 keV with a field of view of 247.\textdegree5 \texttimes 120\textdegree while simultaneously separating H$^+$ from He$^++$ to develop 3D velocity distribution functions of indi ... We present observations of \ensuremath\gtrsim10-100 keV nucleon$^-1$ suprathermal (ST) H, He, O, and Fe ions associated with crossings of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) at radial distances of <0.1 au from the Sun. Our key findings are as follows: (1) very few heavy ions are detected during the first full crossing, the heavy-ion intensities are reduced during the second partial crossing and peak just after the second crossing; (2) ion arrival times exhibit no velocity dispersion; (3) He pitch-angle distributions track t ... We develop and apply a bespoke fitting routine to a large volume of solar wind electron distribution data measured by Parker Solar Probe over its first five orbits, covering radial distances from 0.13 to 0.5 au. We characterize the radial evolution of the electron core, halo, and strahl populations in the slow solar wind during these orbits. The fractional densities of these three electron populations provide evidence for the growth of the combined suprathermal halo and strahl populations from 0.13 to 0.17 au. Moreover, the ... Thermal Energy Budget of Electrons in the Inner Heliosphere: Parker Solar Probe Observations We present an observational analysis of the electron thermal energy budget using data from Parker Solar Probe. We use the macroscopic moments, obtained from our fits to the measured electron distribution function, to evaluate the thermal energy budget based on the second moment of the Boltzmann equation. We separate contributions to the overall budget from reversible and irreversible processes. We find that an irreversible thermal energy source must be present in the inner heliosphere over the heliocentric distance range fro ... The Sunward Electron Deficit: A Telltale Sign of the Sun s Electric Potential As the Parker Solar Probe explores new regions of the inner heliosphere, it travels ever deeper into the electric potential of the Sun. In the near-Sun environment, a new feature of the electron distribution emerges, in the form of a deficit in the sunward suprathermal population. The lower boundary of this deficit forms a cutoff in phase space, at an energy determined by the electric potential drop between the observation point and the outer heliosphere. We explore the characteristics of the sunward deficit and the associat ... Near-Sun Switchback Boundaries: Dissipation with Solar Distance The most surprising result from the first solar encounters by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) is the large amount of brief magnetic field reversals often referred to as switchbacks. Switchbacks have previously been observed further downstream in the solar wind by spacecraft such as Helios 2 at 62 R$_s$ from the Sun. However, these observations lack a distinct proton temperature increase detected inside switchbacks by PSP, implying that they are evolving over time to eventually reach a pressure balance at the switchback boundari ... The nature of the plasma wave modes around the ion kinetic scales in highly Alfv\ enic slow solar wind turbulence is investigated using data from the NASA\textquoterights Parker Solar Probe taken in the inner heliosphere, at 0.18 au from the Sun. The joint distribution of the normalized reduced magnetic helicity σm (θRB, τ) is obtained, where θRB is the angle between the local mean magnetic field and the radial direction and τ is the temporal scale. Two populations around ion scales a ... On the Shape of SEP Electron Spectra: The Role of Interplanetary Transport We address the effect of particle scattering on the energy spectra of solar energetic electron events using (I) an observational and (II) a modeling approach. (I) We statistically study observations of the STEREO spacecraft, using directional electron measurements made with the Solar Electron and Proton Telescope in the range of 45-425 keV. We compare the energy spectra of the anti-Sunward propagating beam with that of the backward-scattered population and find that, on average, the backward-scattered population shows a h ...
