Spacecraft radial alignments for investigations of the evolution of solar wind turbulence: A review

With the launch of the Parker Solar Probe, BepiColombo, and Solar Orbiter missions in the three-year period 2018 - 2020 , the investigation of the evolution of solar wind turbulence, dynamics, and structures in the inner heliosphere has become more readily feasible, thanks to the increasing availability of orbital configurations suitable for multi-point observations of the Sun and the processes it drives in interplanetary space. Specifically, data analysis, models, and numerical simulations based on multi-spacecraft coordina ...

Does Turbulence along the Coronal Current Sheet Drive Ion Cyclotron Waves?

Evidence for the presence of ion cyclotron waves (ICWs), driven by turbulence, at the boundaries of the current sheet is reported in this paper. By exploiting the full potential of the joint observations performed by Parker Solar Probe and the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, local measurements of the solar wind can be linked with the large-scale structures of the solar corona. The results suggest that the dynamics of the current sheet layers generates turbulence, which in turn creates a sufficiently strong temperat ...

First polar observations of the fast solar wind with the Metis - Solar Orbiter coronagraph: Role of 2D turbulence energy dissipation in the wind acceleration

Context. The fast solar wind is known to emanate from polar coronal holes. \ Aims: This Letter reports the first estimate of the expansion rate of polar coronal flows performed by the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter. \ Methods: By exploiting simultaneous measurements in polarized white light and ultraviolet intensity of the neutral hydrogen Lyman-\ensuremath\alpha line, it was possible to extend observations of the outflow velocity of the main component of the solar wind from polar coronal holes out to 5.5 R$_\ensur ...

Observation of a Magnetic Switchback in the Solar Corona

Switchbacks are sudden, large radial deflections of the solar wind magnetic field, widely revealed in interplanetary space by the Parker Solar Probe. The switchbacks formation mechanism and sources are still unresolved, although candidate mechanisms include Alfv\ enic turbulence, shear-driven Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, interchange reconnection, and geometrical effects related to the Parker spiral. This Letter presents observations from the Metis coronagraph on board a Solar Orbiter of a single large propagating S-shape ...

Modeling of Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations

We present the first theoretical modeling of joint Parker Solar Probe (PSP)-Metis/Solar Orbiter (SolO) quadrature observations. The combined observations describe the evolution of a slow solar wind plasma parcel from the extended solar corona (3.5-6.3 R $_\ensuremath\odot$) to the very inner heliosphere (23.2 R $_\ensuremath\odot$). The Metis/SolO instrument remotely measures the solar wind speed finding a range from 96 to 201 km s$^-1$, and PSP measures the solar wind plasma in situ, observing a radial speed of 219.34 km s$ ...

Frequency Transition From Weak to Strong Turbulence in the Solar Wind

During a specific time window while approaching the Sun, the longitudinal speed of Parker Solar Probe matches that of the Sun s rotation. The spacecraft therefore co-rotates with the Sun, and as long as it does so, it is immersed in the solar-wind plasma of the same flow tube. This unique feature of the Parker Solar Probe s orbital configuration is exploited in this work for the first time, to investigate the spectral properties of the turbulence of the same plasma stream, from large to small scales, very close to the Sun. MHD Turbulent Power Anisotropy in the Inner Heliosphere

We study anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the slow solar wind measured by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SolO) during its first orbit from the perspective of variance anisotropy and correlation anisotropy. We use the Belcher \& Davis approach (M1) and a new method (M2) that decomposes a fluctuating vector into parallel and perpendicular fluctuating vectors. M1 and M2 calculate the transverse and parallel turbulence components relative to the mean magnetic field direction. The parallel turbulen ...

Turbulence in the Sub-Alfv\ enic Solar Wind

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) entered a region of sub-Alfv\ enic solar wind during encounter 8, and we present the first detailed analysis of low-frequency turbulence properties in this novel region. The magnetic field and flow velocity vectors were highly aligned during this interval. By constructing spectrograms of the normalized magnetic helicity, cross-helicity, and residual energy, we find that PSP observed primarily Alfv\ enic fluctuations, a consequence of the highly field-aligned flow that renders quasi-2D fluctuation ...

Evolution of coronal hole solar wind in the inner heliosphere: Combined observations by Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe

We study the radial evolution, from 0.1 AU to the Earth, of a homogeneous recurrent fast wind, coming from the same source on the Sun, by means of new measurements by both Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe. With respect to previous radial studies, we extend, for the first time, the analysis of a recurrent fast stream at distances never reached prior to the Parker Solar Probe mission. Confirming previous findings, the observations show: (i) a decrease in the radial trend of the proton density that is slower than the one ex ...

Connecting Solar Orbiter remote-sensing observations and Parker Solar Probe in situ measurements with a numerical MHD reconstruction of the Parker spiral

As a key feature, NASA s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and ESA-NASA s Solar Orbiter (SO) missions cooperate to trace solar wind and transients from their sources on the Sun to the inner interplanetary space. The goal of this work is to accurately reconstruct the interplanetary Parker spiral and the connection between coronal features observed remotely by the Metis coronagraph on-board SO and those detected in situ by PSP at the time of the first PSP-SO quadrature of January 2021. We use the Reverse in situ and MHD Approach (RIMAP ...

Linking Small-scale Solar Wind Properties with Large-scale Coronal Source Regions through Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations

The solar wind measured in situ by Parker Solar Probe in the very inner heliosphere is studied in combination with the remote-sensing observation of the coronal source region provided by the METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The coronal outflows observed near the ecliptic by Metis on 2021 January 17 at 16:30 UT, between 3.5 and 6.3 R $_\ensuremath\odot$ above the eastern solar limb, can be associated with the streams sampled by PSP at 0.11 and 0.26 au from the Sun, in two time intervals almost 5 days apart. The two pla ...

Turbulence and Waves in the Sub-Alfv\ enic Solar Wind Observed by the Parker Solar Probe during Encounter 10

During its 10th orbit around the Sun, the Parker Solar Probe sampled two intervals where the local Alfv\ en speed exceeded the solar wind speed, lasting more than 10 hours in total. In this paper, we analyze the turbulence and wave properties during these periods. The turbulence is observed to be Alfv\ enic and unbalanced, dominated by outward-propagating modes. The power spectrum of the outward-propagating Elsässer z $^+$ mode steepens at high frequencies while that of the inward- propagating z $^-$ mode flattens. The obse ...

The Turbulent Properties of the Sub-Alfv\ enic Solar Wind Measured by the Parker Solar Probe

For the first time, Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed the sub- Alfv\ enic solar wind where the solar wind bulk speed drops below the local Alfv\ en speed for an extended period of time. Here, we report on the turbulent properties of the sub- Alfv\ enic region. We analyze the turbulence correlation length and the energy transfer and compare the results with nearby super-Alfv\ enic regions. As the Alfv\ en speed is larger or comparable to the solar wind speed in the intervals studied, we use a modified Taylor s hypothesis to a ...

Solar wind Alfv\ enicity during solar cycle 23 and 24. Perspective for future observations with Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter

Context. Alfv\ enic fluctuations are ubiquitous features observed in solar wind, especially in the inner heliosphere. However, strong Alfv\ enic fluctuations are recovered in the near-Earth solar wind too, mainly in fast streams, but also in some cases in slow wind intervals, as highlighted in recent studies. \ Aims: The present study focuses on a statistical comparison between different phases of solar cycles 23 and 24 with regard to the Alfv\ enic content of solar wind fluctuations. MHD and Ion Kinetic Waves in Field-aligned Flows Observed by Parker Solar Probe

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed predominately Alfv\ enic fluctuations in the solar wind near the Sun where the magnetic field tends to be radially aligned. In this paper, two magnetic- field-aligned solar wind flow intervals during PSP s first two orbits are analyzed. Observations of these intervals indicate strong signatures of parallel/antiparallel-propagating waves. We utilize multiple analysis techniques to extract the properties of the observed waves in both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic scales. At the MHD sca ...

Turbulence transport in the solar corona: Theory, modeling, and Parker Solar Probe

A primary goal of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Mission is to answer the outstanding question of how the solar corona plasma is heated to the high temperatures needed for the acceleration of the solar wind. Various heating mechanisms have been suggested, but one that is gaining increasing credence is associated with the dissipation of low frequency magnetohyrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Detection of small magnetic flux ropes from the third and fourth Parker Solar Probe encounters

Context.
Aims: We systematically search for magnetic flux rope structures in the solar wind to within the closest distance to the Sun of ~0.13 AU, using data from the third and fourth orbits of the Parker Solar Probe.
Methods: We extended our previous magnetic helicity-based technique of identifying magnetic flux rope structures. The method was improved upon to incorporate the azimuthal flow, which becomes larger as the spacecraft approaches the Sun.
Results: A total of 21 and 34 magnetic flux ropes are ...

Evolution of Solar Wind Turbulence from 0.1 to 1 au during the First Parker Solar Probe-Solar Orbiter Radial Alignment

The first radial alignment between Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter spacecraft is used to investigate the evolution of solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, two 1.5 hr intervals are tentatively identified as providing measurements of the same plasma parcels traveling from 0.1 to 1 au. Using magnetic field measurements from both spacecraft, the properties of turbulence in the two intervals are assessed. Magnetic spectral density, flatness, and high-order moment scaling laws are ca ...

Coherent Events at Ion Scales in the Inner Heliosphere: Parker Solar Probe Observations during the First Encounter

The Parker Solar Probe mission has shown the ubiquitous presence of strong magnetic field deflections, namely switchbacks, during its first perihelion where it was embedded in a highly Alfvenic slow stream. Here, we study the turbulent magnetic fluctuations around ion scales in three intervals characterized by a different switchback activity, identified by the behavior of the magnetic field radial component, B-r. Quiet (B-r does not show significant fluctuations), weakly disturbed (B-r has strong fluctuations but no reversal ...

Spectral Features in Field-aligned Solar Wind Turbulence from Parker Solar Probe Observations

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed a large variety of Alfv\ enic fluctuations in the fast and slow solar wind flow during its two perihelia. The properties of Alfv\ enic solar wind turbulence have been studied for decades in the near-Earth environment. A spectral index of -5/3 or -2 for magnetic field fluctuations has been observed using spacecraft measurements, which can be explained by turbulence theories of nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (NI MHD) or critical balance. In this study, a rigorous search of field ...

On the Fast Solar Wind Heating and Acceleration Processes: A Statistical Study Based on the UVCS Survey Data

The UltraViolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on board the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory has almost continuously observed, throughout the whole solar cycle 23, the UV solar corona. This work addresses the first-ever statistical analysis of the daily UVCS observations, performed in the O VI channel, of the northern polar coronal hole, between 1.5 and 3 R , during the period of low solar activity from 1996 April to 1997 December. The study is based on the investigation, at different heights, of the corr ...
