New Observations of Solar Wind 1/f Turbulence Spectrum from Parker Solar Probe The trace magnetic power spectrum in the solar wind is known to be characterized by a double power law at scales much larger than the proton gyro-radius, with flatter spectral exponents close to -1 found at the lower frequencies below an inertial range with indices closer to [-1.5, -1.67]. The origin of the 1/f range is still under debate. In this study, we selected 109 magnetically incompressible solar wind intervals (\ensuremath\delta\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid/\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid \ensuremath\ll 1) from ... Magnetic Field Spectral Evolution in the Inner Heliosphere Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter data are used to investigate the radial evolution of magnetic turbulence between 0.06 \ensuremath\lesssim R \ensuremath\lesssim 1 au. Proton and Electron Temperatures in the Solar Wind and Their Correlations with the Solar Wind Speed The heating and acceleration of the solar wind remains one of the unsolved fundamental problems in heliophysics. It is usually observed that the proton temperature T $_ i $ is highly correlated with the solar wind speed V $_SW$, while the electron temperature T $_ e $ shows anticorrelation or no clear correlation with the solar wind speed. Here, we inspect both Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and WIND data, and compare the observations with simulation results. PSP observations below 30 solar radii clearly show a positive correlatio ... Context. Whistler waves are electromagnetic waves produced by electron- driven instabilities, which in turn can reshape the electron distributions via wave-particle interactions. In the solar wind they are one of the main candidates for explaining the scattering of the strahl electron population into the halo at increasing radial distances from the Sun and for subsequently regulating the solar wind heat flux. However, it is unclear what type of instability dominates to drive whistler waves in the solar wind. \ Aims: Our goal ... Observations of the young solar wind by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission reveal the existence of intense plasma wave bursts with frequencies between 0.05 and 0.20f $_ce$ (tens of hertz up to \raisebox-0.5ex\textasciitilde300 Hz) in the spacecraft frame. Inhomogeneous Kinetic Alfv\ en Waves in the Near-Sun Solar Wind Intervals of intense electromagnetic, broadband plasma waves are reported in the near-Sun solar wind. These waves are identified as kinetic Alfv\ en waves (KAWs), based on comparison between data and theory for their observed electric- to magnetic-field ratio, and magnetic compressibility, as a function of frequency. In contrast to KAW observations at 1 au, KAWs in the near-Sun solar wind are found to be spatially inhomogeneous, preferentially occurring where the ambient magnetic field experiences strong deviations from the ... Reconciling Parker Solar Probe Observations and Magnetohydrodynamic Theory The Parker Solar Probe mission provides a unique opportunity to characterize several features of the solar wind at different heliocentric distances. Recent findings have shown a transition in the inertial range spectral and scaling properties around 0.4-0.5 au when moving away from the Sun. Here we provide, for the first time, how to reconcile these observational results on the radial evolution of the magnetic and velocity field fluctuations with two scenarios drawn from the magnetohydrodynamic theory. Observations of Quiescent Solar Wind Regions with Near-f $_ce$ Wave Activity In situ measurements in the near-Sun solar wind from the Parker Solar Probe have revealed the existence of quiescent solar wind regions: extended regions of solar wind with low-amplitude turbulent magnetic field fluctuations compared to adjacent regions. Langmuir-Slow Extraordinary Mode Magnetic Signature Observations with Parker Solar Probe Radio emission from interplanetary shocks, planetary foreshocks, and some solar flares occurs in the so-called plasma emission framework. The generally accepted scenario begins with electrostatic Langmuir waves that are driven by a suprathermal electron beam on the Landau resonance. These Langmuir waves then mode-convert to freely propagating electromagnetic emissions at the local plasma frequency f $_ pe $ and/or its harmonic 2f $_ pe $. However, the details of the physics of mode conversion are unclear, and so far the ... In the lower solar coronal regions where the magnetic field is dominant, the Alfv\ en speed is much higher than the wind speed. Markovian Features of the Solar Wind at Subproton Scales The interplanetary magnetic field carried out from the Sun by the solar wind displays fluctuations over a wide range of scales. While at large scales, say at frequencies lower than 0.1-1 Hz, fluctuations display the universal character of fully developed turbulence with a well-defined Kolmogorov-like inertial range, the physical and dynamical properties of the small-scale regime as well as their connection with the large-scale ones are still a debated topic. On the Origin of Switchbacks Observed in the Solar Wind The origin of switchbacks in the solar wind is discussed in two classes of theory that differ in the location of the source being either near the transition region near the Sun or in the solar wind itself. The two classes of theory differ in their predictions of the switchback rate (the number of switchbacks observed per hour) as a function of distance from the Sun. To distinguish between these theories, one-hour averages of Parker Solar Probe data were averaged over five orbits to find the following: (1) The hourly averaged ... Energetic particle behavior in near-Sun magnetic field switchbacks from PSP Context. The observation of numerous magnetic switchbacks and associated plasma jets in Parker Solar Probe (PSP) during its first five orbits, particularly near the Sun, has attracted considerable attention. Switchbacks have been found to be systematically associated with correlated reversals in the direction of the propagation of Alfvénic fluctuations, as well as similar reversals of the electron strahl. Context. Recent studies of the solar wind sunward of 0.25 AU reveal that it contains quiescent regions, with low-amplitude plasma and magnetic field fluctuations, and a magnetic field direction similar to the Parker spiral. The quiescent regions are thought to have a more direct magnetic connection to the solar corona than other types of solar wind, suggesting that waves or instabilities in the quiescent regions are indicative of the early evolution of the solar wind as it escapes the corona. The quiescent solar wind regions ... Prevalence of magnetic reconnection in the near-Sun heliospheric current sheet During three of its first five orbits around the Sun, Parker Solar Probe (PSP) crossed the large-scale heliospheric current sheet (HCS) multiple times and provided unprecedented detailed plasma and field observations of the near-Sun HCS. We report the common detections by PSP of reconnection exhaust signatures in the HCS at heliocentric distances of 29.5-107 solar radii during encounters 1, 4, and 5. Both sunward and antisunward-directed reconnection exhausts were observed. In the sunward reconnection exhausts, PSP detected ... Wave-particle energy transfer directly observed in an ion cyclotron wave Context. The first studies with Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data have made significant progress toward understanding of the fundamental properties of ion cyclotron waves in the inner heliosphere. The survey mode particle measurements of PSP, however, did not make it possible to measure the coupling between electromagnetic fields and particles on the time scale of the wave periods. Nonlinear Ion-acoustic Waves, Ion Holes, and Electron Holes in the Near-Sun Solar Wind Nonlinear ion-acoustic waves, ion holes, and electron holes have been observed on the Parker Solar Probe at a heliocentric distance of 35 solar radii. These time domain structures contain millisecond duration electric field spikes of several mV m-1. They are observed inside or at boundaries of switchbacks in the background magnetic field. Their presence in switchbacks indicates that both electron- and ion-streaming electrostatic instabilities occur there to thermalize electron and ion beams. Evidence of Subproton-Scale Magnetic Holes in the Venusian Magnetosheath Abstract Depressions in magnetic field strength, commonly referred to as magnetic holes, are observed ubiquitously in space plasmas. Subproton-scale magnetic holes with spatial scales smaller than or on the order of a proton gyroradius, are likely supported by electron current vortices, rotating perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. While there are numerous accounts of subproton-scale magnetic holes within the Earth’s magnetosphere, there are few, if any, reported observations in other space plasma environments. We ... Proton core behaviour inside magnetic field switchbacks During Parker Solar Probe s first two orbits, there are widespread observations of rapid magnetic field reversals known as switchbacks. These switchbacks are extensively found in the near-Sun solar wind, appear to occur in patches, and have possible links to various phenomena such as magnetic reconnection near the solar surface. As switchbacks are associated with faster plasma flows, we questioned whether they are hotter than the background plasma and whether the microphysics inside a switchback is different to its surroundi ...
