Avoiding the burn: Maintaining a Sun-safe attitude for the Solar Probe Plus spacecraft

The Solar Probe Plus (SPP) mission plans to send a spacecraft to explore the inner region of the heliosphere and is currently working towards launch in 2018. The SPP spacecraft will make in-situ measurements and remote observations over a series of 24 nearly-ecliptic solar orbits with perihelion decreasing from 35 solar radii (Rs) to a minimum of 9.86 Rs over a period of 7 years.
