Constraining a Model of the Radio Sky below 6 MHz Using the Parker Solar Probe/FIELDS Instrument in Preparation for Upcoming Lunar-based Experiments

We present a Bayesian analysis of data from the FIELDS instrument on board the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft with the aim of constraining low-frequency (\ensuremath\lesssim6 MHz) sky in preparation for several upcoming lunar-based experiments. We utilize data recorded during PSP s coning roll maneuvers, in which the axis of the spacecraft is pointed 45\textdegree off of the Sun. The spacecraft then rotates about a line between the Sun and the spacecraft with a period of 24 minutes. We reduce the data into two formats: ...

Magnetic Reconnection as the Driver of the Solar Wind

We present EUV solar observations showing evidence for omnipresent jetting activity driven by small-scale magnetic reconnection at the base of the solar corona. We argue that the physical mechanism that heats and drives the solar wind at its source is ubiquitous magnetic reconnection in the form of small-scale jetting activity (a.k.a. jetlets). This jetting activity, like the solar wind and the heating of the coronal plasma, is ubiquitous regardless of the solar cycle phase. Each event arises from small-scale reconnection of ...

Interchange reconnection as the source of the fast solar wind within coronal holes

The fast solar wind that fills the heliosphere originates from deep within regions of open magnetic field on the Sun called coronal holes . The energy source responsible for accelerating the plasma is widely debated; however, there is evidence that it is ultimately magnetic in nature, with candidate mechanisms including wave heating$^1,2$ and interchange reconnection$^3-5$. The coronal magnetic field near the solar surface is structured on scales associated with supergranulation convection cells, whereby descending flows ...

New Observations of Solar Wind 1/f Turbulence Spectrum from Parker Solar Probe

The trace magnetic power spectrum in the solar wind is known to be characterized by a double power law at scales much larger than the proton gyro-radius, with flatter spectral exponents close to -1 found at the lower frequencies below an inertial range with indices closer to [-1.5, -1.67]. The origin of the 1/f range is still under debate. In this study, we selected 109 magnetically incompressible solar wind intervals (\ensuremath\delta\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid/\ensuremath\mid B \ensuremath\mid \ensuremath\ll 1) from ...

The Evolution of the 1/f Range within a Single Fast-solar-wind Stream between 17.4 and 45.7 Solar Radii

The power spectrum of magnetic field fluctuations in the fast solar wind (V $_SW$ > 500 km s$^-1$) at magnetohydrodynamic scales is characterized by two different power laws on either side of a break frequency f $_b$. The low-frequency range at frequencies f smaller than f $_b$ is often viewed as the energy reservoir that feeds the turbulent cascade at f > f $_b$. At heliocentric distances r exceeding 60 solar radii (R $_s$), the power spectrum often has a 1/f scaling at f < f $_b$, i.e., the spectral index is close to -1. I ...

Interferometric imaging of the type IIIb and U radio bursts observed with LOFAR on 22 August 2017

Context. The Sun is the source of different types of radio bursts that are associated with solar flares, for example. Among the most frequently observed phenomena are type III solar bursts. Their radio images at low frequencies (below 100 MHz) are relatively poorly studied due to the limitations of legacy radio telescopes. \ Aims: We study the general characteristics of types IIIb and U with stria structure solar radio bursts in the frequency range of 20-80 MHz, in particular the source size and evolution in different altitu ...

Deriving Large Coronal Magnetic Loop Parameters Using LOFAR J Burst Observations

Large coronal loops around one solar radius in altitude are an important connection between the solar wind and the low solar corona. However, their plasma properties are ill-defined, as standard X-ray and UV techniques are not suited to these low-density environments. Diagnostics from type J solar radio bursts at frequencies above 10 MHz are ideally suited to understand these coronal loops. Despite this, J-bursts are less frequently studied than their type III cousins, in part because the curvature of the coronal loop makes ...

Parker Solar Probe: Four Years of Discoveries at Solar Cycle Minimum

Launched on 12 Aug. 2018, NASA s Parker Solar Probe had completed 13 of its scheduled 24 orbits around the Sun by Nov. 2022. The mission s primary science goal is to determine the structure and dynamics of the Sun s coronal magnetic field, understand how the solar corona and wind are heated and accelerated, and determine what processes accelerate energetic particles. Parker Solar Probe returned a treasure trove of science data that far exceeded quality, significance, and quantity expectations, leading to a significant number ...

Simulation of the Solar Energetic Particle Event on 2020 May 29 Observed by Parker Solar Probe

This paper presents a stochastic three-dimensional focused transport simulation of solar energetic particles (SEPs) produced by a data-driven coronal mass ejection (CME) shock propagating through a data-driven model of coronal and heliospheric magnetic fields. The injection of SEPs at the CME shock is treated using diffusive shock acceleration of post-shock suprathermal solar wind ions. A time-backward stochastic simulation is employed to solve the transport equation to obtain the SEP time-intensity profile at any location, ...

Turbulent magnetic reconnection generated by intense lasers

Turbulent magnetic reconnection is believed to occur in astrophysical plasmas, and it has been suggested to be a trigger of solar flares. It often occurs in long stretched and fragmented current sheets. Recent observations by the Parker Solar Probe, the Solar Dynamics Observatory and in situ satellite missions agree with signatures expected from turbulent reconnection. However, the underlying mechanisms, including how magnetic energy stored in the Sun s magnetic field is dissipated, remain unclear. Here we demonstrate turbul ...

A Data-constrained Scheme for the Reconstruction of Solar Wind Parameters in the Inner Heliosphere

With the development of our industrial society, the reconstruction of solar wind parameters in the inner heliosphere becomes very important to understanding the interplanetary propagation of various types of space weather disturbance. However, the situ observations of solar wind parameters are only applicable to several points where spacecraft are located. Therefore, we have to rely on the numerical technologies to reconstruct the solar wind parameters. The scheme for the reconstruction of solar wind parameters can be classi ...

Estimation of Turbulent Proton and Electron Heating Rates via Landau Damping Constrained by Parker Solar Probe Observations

The heating of ions and electrons due to turbulent dissipation plays a crucial role in the thermodynamics of the solar wind and other plasma environments. Using magnetic field and thermal plasma observations from the first two perihelia of the Parker Solar Probe, we model the relative heating rates as a function of the radial distance, magnetic spectra, and plasma conditions, enabling us to better characterize the thermodynamics of the inner heliosphere. We employ the Howes et al. steady-state cascade model, which considers ...

Higher-order Turbulence Statistics in the Sub-Alfv\ enic Solar Wind Observed by Parker Solar Probe

Parker Solar Probe has been the first spacecraft to enter the deep corona below the Alfv\ en critical point. Here we examine the higher-order statistical properties of magnetic-field fluctuations in the sub-Alfv\ enic solar wind and compare the results with the neighboring super-Alfv\ enic region. The intermittency and multifractal properties are analyzed by inspecting the probability density functions, the scale- dependent kurtosis, and fractal spectrum of magnetic-field fluctuations. It is found that the magnetic-field flu ...

Parker Solar Probe Observations of Solar Wind Energetic Proton Beams Produced by Magnetic Reconnection in the Near-Sun Heliospheric Current Sheet

We report observations of reconnection exhausts in the Heliospheric Current Sheet (HCS) during Parker Solar Probe Encounters 08 and 07, at 16 R$_s$ and 20 R$_s$, respectively. Heliospheric current sheet (HCS) reconnection accelerated protons to almost twice the solar wind speed and increased the proton core energy by a factor of \ensuremath\sim3, due to the Alfv\ en speed being comparable to the solar wind flow speed at these near-Sun distances. Furthermore, protons were energized to super-thermal energies. During E08, energ ...

PSP Observations of a Slow Shock Pair Bounding a Large-Scale Plasmoid/Macro Magnetic Hole

Slow shocks are introduced to be the main dissipation sites in Petschek reconnection model, but they are seldom observed in interplanetary space. We report a slow shock pair bounding a plasmoid/macro magnetic hole observed by Parker Solar Probe. The jump conditions across the shocks are examined and confirmed to satisfy the Rankine-Hugoniot relations. The flow speed in the preshock and postshock regions of both shocks match up with the characteristics of slow shocks. The slow shock pair is suggested to be a part of a curved ...

In this Letter, we report observations of magnetic switchback (SB) features near 1 au using data from the Wind spacecraft. In the solar-wind streams that we analyzed, these specific SB features near 1 au are associated with large-amplitude Alf ...

Strong Perpendicular Velocity-space Diffusion in Proton Beams Observed by Parker Solar Probe

The SWEAP instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) has detected numerous proton beams associated with coherent, circularly polarized, ion-scale waves observed by PSP s FIELDS instrument suite. We refer to these proton beams, with their attendant hammerhead fe ...

Three-Dimensional Anisotropy and Scaling Properties of Solar Wind Turbulence at Kinetic Scales in the Inner Heliosphere: Parker Solar Probe Observations

We utilize the data from the Parker Solar Probe mission at its first perihelion to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) anisotropies and scalings of solar wind turbulence for the total, perpendicular, and parallel magnetic-field fluctuations at kinetic scales in the inner heliosphere. By calculating the five-point second-order structure functions, we find that the three characteristic lengths of turbulence eddies for the total and the perpendicular magnetic-field fluctuations in the local reference frame $(\hatL_\perp ,\ha ...

Slow Shock Formation Upstream of Reconnecting Current Sheets

The formation, development, and impact of slow shocks in the upstream regions of reconnecting current layers are explored. Slow shocks have been documented in the upstream regions of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of magnetic reconnection as well as in similar simulations with the kglobal kinetic macroscale simulation model. They are therefore a candidate mechanism for preheating the plasma that is injected into the current layers that facilitate magnetic energy release in solar flares. Of particular interest is their ...

Flux Rope Merging and the Structure of Switchbacks in the Solar Wind

A major discovery of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) was the presence of large numbers of localized increases in the radial solar wind speed and associated sharp deflections of the magnetic field- switchbacks (SBs). A possible generation mechanism of SBs is through magnetic reconnection between open and closed magnetic flux near the solar surface, termed interchange reconnection, that leads to the ejection of flux ropes (FRs) into the solar wind. Observations also suggest that SBs undergo merging, consistent with an FR picture of t ...

PSP/IS\ensuremath\odotIS Observation of a Solar Energetic Particle Event Associated with a Streamer Blowout Coronal Mass Ejection during Encounter 6

In this paper we examine a low-energy solar energetic particle (SEP) event observed by IS\ensuremath\odotIS s Energetic Particle Instrument-Low (EPI-Lo) inside 0.18 au on 2020 September 30. This small SEP event has a very interesting time profile and ion composition. Our results show that the maximum energy and peak in intensity are observed mainly along the open radial magnetic field. The event shows velocity dispersion, and strong particle anisotropies are observed throughout the event, showing that more particles are stre ...

Evolution of coronal hole solar wind in the inner heliosphere: Combined observations by Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe

We study the radial evolution, from 0.1 AU to the Earth, of a homogeneous recurrent fast wind, coming from the same source on the Sun, by means of new measurements by both Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe. With respect to previous radial studies, we extend, for the first time, the analysis of a recurrent fast stream at distances never reached prior to the Parker Solar Probe mission. Confirming previous findings, the observations show: (i) a decrease in the radial trend of the proton density that is slower than the one ex ...

Small-Scale Magnetic Holes in the Solar Wind Observed by Parker Solar Probe

The small-scale magnetic hole (SSMH), characterized by magnetic field depression, is a structure with the size in the order of proton gyro-radius. SSMHs near the Earth or other planets have been widely observed in recent years. However, SSMHs in the solar wind near the Sun are rarely investigated due to mission constraints. In the present study, SSMHs in the pristine solar wind within a wide heliocentric distance range are analyzed based on the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Mission measurements. A total of 2,416 SSMHs are success ...

Anisotropy of Magnetic Field Spectra at Kinetic Scales of Solar Wind Turbulence as Revealed by the Parker Solar Probe in the Inner Heliosphere

Using the Parker Solar Probe data taken in the inner heliosphere, we investigate the power and spatial anisotropy of magnetic field spectra at kinetic scales (i.e., around sub-ion scales) in solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere. We find that strong anisotropy of the magnetic spectra occurs at kinetic scales with the strongest power in the perpendicular direction with respect to the local magnetic field (forming an angle \ensuremath\theta $_B$ with the mean flow velocity). The spectral index of the magnetic spectra ...

On the Origin of Switchbacks Observed in the Solar Wind

The origin of switchbacks in the solar wind is discussed in two classes of theory that differ in the location of the source being either near the transition region near the Sun or in the solar wind itself. The two classes of theory differ in their predictions of the switchback rate (the number of switchbacks observed per hour) as a function of distance from the Sun. To distinguish between these theories, one-hour averages of Parker Solar Probe data were averaged over five orbits to find the following: (1) The hourly averaged ...

Evolution of Large-amplitude Alfv\ en Waves and Generation of Switchbacks in the Expanding Solar Wind

Motivated by recent Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations of switchbacks (abrupt, large-amplitude reversals in the radial magnetic field, which exhibit Alfv\ enic correlations), we examine the dynamics of large-amplitude Alfv\ en waves in the expanding solar wind. We develop an analytic model that makes several predictions: switchbacks should preferentially occur in regions where the solar wind plasma has undergone a greater expansion, the switchback fraction at radii comparable to PSP should be an increasing function of ...

Solar Origin of Compressive Alfv\ enic Spikes/Kinks as Observed by Parker Solar Probe

The solar wind is found by the Parker Solar Probe to be abundant with Alfv\ enic velocity spikes and magnetic field kinks. Temperature enhancement is another remarkable feature associated with the Alfv\ enic spikes. How the prototype of these coincident phenomena is generated intermittently in the source region is an important and wide-ranging subject. Here we propose a new model introducing guide-field discontinuity into the interchange magnetic reconnection between open funnels and closed loops with different magnetic heli ...

Turbulent Generation of Magnetic Switchbacks in the Alfv\ enic Solar Wind

One of the most important early results from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) is the ubiquitous presence of magnetic switchbacks, whose origin is under debate. A Provably Positive, Divergence-free Constrained Transport Scheme for the Simulation of Solar Wind

In this paper, we present a provably positive, divergence-free constrained transport (CT) scheme to simulate the steady-state solar wind ambient with the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics numerical model. The positivity can be lost in two ways: one way is in the reconstruction process, and the other is in the updating process when the variables are advanced to the next time step. We adopt a self-adjusting strategy to bring the density and pressure into the permitted range in the reconstruction process, and use modified ...

Multiscale Solar Wind Turbulence Properties inside and near Switchbacks Measured by the Parker Solar Probe

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) routinely observes magnetic field deflections in the solar wind at distances less than 0.3 au from the Sun. These deflections are related to structures commonly called "switchbacks" (SBs), whose origins and characteristic properties are currently debated. Here, we use a database of visually selected SB intervals—and regions of solar wind plasma measured just before and after each SB—to examine plasma parameters, turbulent spectra from inertial to dissipation scales, and intermittency ...
