Compressible Turbulence in the Near-Sun Solar Wind: Parker Solar Probe s First Eight Perihelia Many questions remain about the compressibility of solar wind turbulence with respect to its origins and properties. Low plasma beta (ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure) environments allow for the easier generation of compressible turbulence, enabling study of the relationship between density fluctuations and turbulent Mach number. Utilizing Parker Solar Probe plasma data, we examine the normalized proton density fluctuations $\langle \delta n_p^2\rangle ^1/2/\langle n_p\rangle Cuesta, Manuel; Chhiber, Rohit; Fu, Xiangrong; Du, Senbei; Yang, Yan; Pecora, Francesco; Matthaeus, William; Li, Hui; Steinberg, John; Guo, Fan; Gan, Zhaoming; Conrad, Emma; Swanson, Diana; Published by: \apjl Published on: jun YEAR: 2023   DOI: 10.3847/2041-8213/acd4c2 Parker Data Used; interplanetary turbulence; Plasma physics; Space plasmas; 830; 2089; 1544; Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics; Physics - Plasma Physics; Physics - Space Physics |

We study the radial evolution, from 0.1 AU to the Earth, of a homogeneous recurrent fast wind, coming from the same source on the Sun, by means of new measurements by both Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe. With respect to previous radial studies, we extend, for the first time, the analysis of a recurrent fast stream at distances never reached prior to the Parker Solar Probe mission. Confirming previous findings, the observations show: (i) a decrease in the radial trend of the proton density that is slower than the one ex ... One of the discoveries of the Parker Solar Probe during its first encounters with the Sun is ubiquitous presence of relatively small-scale structures standing out as sudden deflections of the magnetic field. They were named "switchbacks" since some of them show a full reversal of the radial component of the magnetic field and then return to "regular" conditions. We carried out an analysis of three typical switchback structures having different characteristics: I. Alfv\ enic structure, where the variations of the magnetic ... Observations by the Parker Solar Probe mission of the solar wind at \~35.7 solar radii reveal the existence of whistler wave packets with frequencies below 0.1 fce (20-80 Hz in the spacecraft frame). These waves often coincide with local minima of the magnetic field magnitude or with sudden deflections of the magnetic field that are called switchbacks. Their sunward propagation leads to a significant Doppler frequency downshift from 200-300 to 20-80 Hz (from 0.2 to 0.5 fce). The polarization of these ... The SBO-CME on November 11 was directed away from the Earth and was not visible by L1 or Earth-based telescopes due to this geom ... Switchbacks (rotations of the magnetic field) are observed on the Parker Solar Probe. Their evolution, content, and plasma effects are studied in this paper. The solar wind does not receive a net acceleration from switchbacks that it encountered upstream of the observation point. The typical switchback rotation angle increased with radial distance. Significant Poynting fluxes existed inside, but not outside, switchbacks, and the dependence of the Poynting flux amplitude on the switchback radial location and rotation angle ... Highly structured slow solar wind emerging from an equatorial coronal hole During the solar minimum, when the Sun is at its least active, the solar wind is observed at high latitudes as a predominantly fast (more than 500 kilometres per second), highly Alfv\ enic rarefied stream of plasma originating from deep within coronal holes. Closer to the ecliptic plane, the solar wind is interspersed with a more variable slow wind of less than 500 kilometres per second. The precise origins of the slow wind streams are less certain; theories and observations suggest that they may originate at the tips of ... On the Performance of Multi-Instrument Solar Flare Observations During Solar Cycle 24 The current fleet of space-based solar observatories offers us a wealth of opportunities to study solar flares over a range of wavelengths. Significant advances in our understanding of flare physics often come from coordinated observations between multiple instruments. Consequently, considerable efforts have been, and continue to be, made to coordinate observations among instruments ( e.g. through the Max Millennium Program of Solar Flare Research). However, there has been no study to date that quantifies how many flares ... Risk reduction of integration and testing operations using augmented reality on Parker solar probe Flying a spacecraft involves significant risks, but building and testing should not have to. At the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL), the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) program has leveraged Augmented Reality (AR) to reduce risks involved with mechanical integration and testing (I&T) operations of the spacecraft. Three major contexts benefitted using AR tools: 1) design and rehearsal of integration sequences and procedures, 2) planning and preparing for flight system level testing, and 3) communication ... Ensemble Space-Time Correlation of Plasma Turbulence in the Solar Wind Single point measurement turbulence cannot distinguish variations in space and time. We employ an ensemble of one- and two-point measurements in the solar wind to estimate the space-time correlation function in the comoving plasma frame. The method is illustrated using near Earth spacecraft observations, employing ACE, Geotail, IMP-8, and Wind data sets. New results include an evaluation of both correlation time and correlation length from a single method, and a new assessment of the accuracy of the familiar frozen-in flo ... Outgassing modeling for solar probe plus The spacecraft for the Solar Probe Plus mission, due to launch in 2018, will encounter an extreme near-Sun thermal and plasma environment. Outgassing of materials such as silicone adhesives in this previously unexplored environment can result in deposits on solar arrays, instrument components, and other sensitive spacecraft surfaces. Array surfaces exposed to UV can cause those deposits to be fixed to the surface, degrading their performance. To assess the severity of the deposits, the Solar Probe Plus program has undertaken ... Spacecraft charging and ion wake formation in the near-Sun environment A three-dimensional, self-consistent code is employed to solve for the static potential structure surrounding a spacecraft in a high photoelectron environment. The numerical solutions show that, under certain conditions, a spacecraft can take on a negative potential in spite of strong photoelectron currents. The negative potential is due to an electrostatic barrier near the surface of the spacecraft that can reflect a large fraction of the photoelectron flux back to the spacecraft. This electrostatic barrier forms if (1) ...
