Magnetic Reconnection as the Driver of the Solar Wind We present EUV solar observations showing evidence for omnipresent jetting activity driven by small-scale magnetic reconnection at the base of the solar corona. We argue that the physical mechanism that heats and drives the solar wind at its source is ubiquitous magnetic reconnection in the form of small-scale jetting activity (a.k.a. jetlets). This jetting activity, like the solar wind and the heating of the coronal plasma, is ubiquitous regardless of the solar cycle phase. Each event arises from small-scale reconnection of ... New Evidence on the Origin of Solar Wind Microstreams/Switchbacks Microstreams are fluctuations in the solar wind speed and density associated with polarity-reversing folds in the magnetic field (also denoted switchbacks). Despite their long heritage, the origin of these microstreams/switchbacks remains poorly understood. For the first time, we investigated periodicities in microstreams during Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Encounter 10 to understand their origin. Our analysis was focused on the inbound corotation interval on 2021 November 19-21, while the spacecraft dove toward a small area wit ... Quasi-periodic Energy Release and Jets at the Base of Solar Coronal Plumes Coronal plumes are long, ray-like, open structures that have been considered as possible sources of the solar wind. Their origin in the largely unipolar coronal holes has long been a mystery. Earlier spectroscopic and imaging observations revealed blueshifted plasma and propagating disturbances (PDs) in plumes that are widely interpreted in terms of flows and/or propagating slow-mode waves, but these interpretations (flows versus waves) remain under debate. Recently we discovered an important clue about plume internal struct ... The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) mission has been studied since 1958. After many iterations and changes in design, the mission was launched on August 12, 2018 (see, https://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/parker-solar-probe). PSP has completed its 3rd rendezvous with Venus and 6th perihelion passage. Each flyby brings PSP closer to the Sun (eventually to 9.7 solar radii). In October 2020 it flew within 20 solar radii of the solar surface. A goal of the mission is to determine how the solar corona is heated to ∼ a million degrees. ... Shear-driven Transition to Isotropically Turbulent Solar Wind Outside the Alfv\ en Critical Zone Motivated by prior remote observations of a transition from striated\ solar\ coronal structures to more isotropic "flocculated" fluctuations, we propose that the dynamics of the inner\ solar\ wind just outside the Alfven critical zone, and in the vicinity of the first beta = 1 surface, is powered by the relative velocities of adjacent coronal magnetic flux tubes. We suggest that large-amplitude flow contrasts are magnetically constrained at lower altitude but shear-driven dynamics are triggered as such ... Near-Sun observations of an F-corona decrease and K-corona fine structure Remote observations of the solar photospheric light scattered by electrons (the K-corona) and dust (the F-corona or zodiacal light) have been made from the ground during eclipses and from space at distances as small as 0.3 astronomical units to the Sun. Previous observations of dust scattering have not confirmed the existence of the theoretically predicted dust-free zone near the Sun. The transient nature of the corona has been well characterized for large events, but questions still remain (for example, about the initiat ... INBOUND WAVES IN THE SOLAR CORONA: A DIRECT INDICATOR OF ALFV\ EN SURFACE LOCATION The tenuous supersonic solar wind that streams from the top of the corona passes through a natural boundary\textemdashthe Alfv\ en surface\textemdashthat marks the causal disconnection of individual packets of plasma and magnetic flux from the Sun itself. The Alfv\ en surface is the locus where the radial motion of the accelerating solar wind passes the radial Alfv\ en speed, and therefore any displacement of material cannot carry information back down into the corona. It is thus the natural outer boundary of the solar co ...
