Contrasting Scaling Properties of Near-Sun Sub-Alfv\ enic and Super-Alfv\ enic Regions

Scale-invariance has rapidly established itself as one of the most used concepts in space plasmas to uncover underlying physical mechanisms via the scaling-law behavior of the statistical properties of field fluctuations. In this work, we characterize the scaling properties of the magnetic field fluctuations in a sub-alfv\ enic region in contrast with those of the nearby super-alfv\ enic zone during the ninth Parker Solar Probe perihelion. With our observations, (i) evidence of an extended self-similarity (ESS) for both the ...

Linking Small-scale Solar Wind Properties with Large-scale Coronal Source Regions through Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations

The solar wind measured in situ by Parker Solar Probe in the very inner heliosphere is studied in combination with the remote-sensing observation of the coronal source region provided by the METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The coronal outflows observed near the ecliptic by Metis on 2021 January 17 at 16:30 UT, between 3.5 and 6.3 R $_\ensuremath\odot$ above the eastern solar limb, can be associated with the streams sampled by PSP at 0.11 and 0.26 au from the Sun, in two time intervals almost 5 days apart. The two pla ...

Markovian Features of the Solar Wind at Subproton Scales

The interplanetary magnetic field carried out from the Sun by the solar wind displays fluctuations over a wide range of scales. While at large scales, say at frequencies lower than 0.1-1 Hz, fluctuations display the universal character of fully developed turbulence with a well-defined Kolmogorov-like inertial range, the physical and dynamical properties of the small-scale regime as well as their connection with the large-scale ones are still a debated topic. In this work we investigate the near-Sun magnetic field fluctuation ...

Study of two interacting interplanetary coronal mass ejections encountered by Solar Orbiter during its first perihelion passage. Observations and modeling

Context. Solar Orbiter, the new-generation mission dedicated to solar and heliospheric exploration, was successfully launched on February 10, 2020, 04:03 UTC from Cape Canaveral. During its first perihelion passage in June 2020, two successive interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), propagating along the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), impacted the spacecraft. \ Aims: This paper addresses the investigation of the ICMEs encountered by Solar Orbiter on June 7\ensuremath-8, 2020, from both an observational and a modeli ...

Evolution of Solar Wind Turbulence from 0.1 to 1 au during the First Parker Solar Probe-Solar Orbiter Radial Alignment

The first radial alignment between Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter spacecraft is used to investigate the evolution of solar wind turbulence in the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, two 1.5 hr intervals are tentatively identified as providing measurements of the same plasma parcels traveling from 0.1 to 1 au. Using magnetic field measurements from both spacecraft, the properties of turbulence in the two intervals are assessed. Magnetic spectral density, flatness, and high-order moment scaling laws are ca ...

On the Scaling Properties of Magnetic-field Fluctuations through the Inner Heliosphere

Although the interplanetary magnetic-field variability has been extensively investigated in situ using data from several space missions, newly launched missions providing high-resolution measures and approaching the Sun offer the possibility to study the multiscale variability in the innermost\ solar\ system. Here, using\ Parker\ Solar\ Probe\ measurements, we investigate the scaling properties of\ solar\ wind magnetic-field fluctuations at different heliocentric distances. The resu ...

Spectral Features in Field-aligned Solar Wind Turbulence from Parker Solar Probe Observations

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed a large variety of Alfv\ enic fluctuations in the fast and slow solar wind flow during its two perihelia. The properties of Alfv\ enic solar wind turbulence have been studied for decades in the near-Earth environment. A spectral index of -5/3 or -2 for magnetic field fluctuations has been observed using spacecraft measurements, which can be explained by turbulence theories of nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (NI MHD) or critical balance. In this study, a rigorous search of field ...
